Bill,

I used the SMART Recorder software (PC version). One of the options is to record just a section of the screen. I opened the web page and then used that option to select the part of the web page I wanted. I recorded several sections for this one and then cut them together with iMovie.

If I recall, it was a pain to get them into iMovie because they were .wmv files. My version of flip-4-mac wouldn't read them, so I had to first run them through MovieMaker and save them as .avi files. Then I could import them into iMovie. I guess I could have just done the editing in MovieMaker, but I'm an iMovie snob. Once I had it in iMovie, I did the voice over and added the audio.

You use a Mac, right? Unfortunately, I don't like the way the Mac version of SMART Recorder looks when the videos are done, so I use the PC version. Watch the Mac tables video I did to see what I mean. Objects don't move smoothly and the audio seems to get off from the video if you are using a mic and capturing the video and audio at the same time. That's why I do the audio in iMovie after recording the video.

I have Parallels Desktop on my personal Mac running Windows XP. I have Smart Notebook installed on the PC side. I've done some recordings that way. So if you don't have access to a PC version, that works well if you have Parallels. You can also do the editing in MovieMaker that way too.

I've also used the free version of Jing to record. It looks great on Mac or PC. You can only record 5 minutes at a time, however. It saves them as either.flv or shockwave files, so there is no editing later. You can upload them to screencast.com, which you must register for to install Jing. Watch the example I did on creating themes.

Hope this helps.

How did you create these videos? What site or software did you use? I am interested in making how to videos for staff in our district and need to find a way to record what I am doing on the screen as I talk my way through the teaching as well...

Thanks Matt,

Bill

Absolutely not. I just made this to show the teachers in my district how to get the videos that we have stored on our district server to their desktops to use the SMART video player.
