Comment by Boris Berlijn on November 21, 2011 at 3:01pm It's not saving the bulb at all. Leave it no longer on than about one hour. It gets really hot in there (the projector) and the bulb it's life will shorten due to this action and it will break due to the heat sooner ...
Comment by Matt Granger on November 21, 2011 at 9:14am So, the AV mute, or blank screen, or whatever your projector calls it times out after a while and shows the screen again? What kind of projector do you have? Is it a SMART projector or third party?
My Epson doesn't have a time out on that. Unfortunately, I've forgotten I was in "AV Mute" and left it on all weekend a few times. I just shut mine down when I'm not using it. Sure, you have a longer startup wait, but my AV Mute doesn't actually shut down the bulb. Yes, it stops projecting, but looking up at the projector shows that the bulb is still on. No light is projecting on the screen, but I can see light up there. I'm not sure how much it would really save the bulb.
I've tweeted the post. Maybe we'll get smarter people than I to reply.
