Comment by Obe Hostetter on November 30, 2011 at 4:00pm Ink layer comes up when you are using the SMART Board with software other than Notebook and Microsoft Office software. It is typically shown by a frame around the screen when you pick up a SMART Board pen.
Ink aware is software that works with the SMART Board like Microsoft Office. If you disable ink aware than Microsoft Office software will get the frame or ink layer just like any other software. You can disable it clicking on the SMART Tools (blue) icon in the bottom right, and choose "Control Panel". then "configure SMART tools." Click on "Ink Aware Program Settings" and make sure to uncheck everything (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Click ok and close windows.
Comment by Matt Granger on November 30, 2011 at 3:55pm Ink Aware is for programs that have a feature built into them (MS Office, Inspiration, and others) to recognize that they are being used on a computer attached to some kind of digital writing surface. That includes an interactive whiteboard, graphics tablets, and tablet computers. It allows the users to insert hand drawn images and text into the document.
The ink layer is supposed to open on the SMART Board when a pen is picked up and the active program is anything other than SMART Notebook or ink aware programs. Then you can write on web pages, google earth, math programs, etc.
What the teacher that you were talking about could do is use the print capture to get the document into notebook. Then she doesn't have to worry about this. As far as I know, this only works on a PC, but there is a Mac workaround.
1. Go to the "File" menu and select "Print".
2. Change the printer to SMART Print Capture.
3. Click print.
This will turn each page of the document into a graphics file and create a Notebook page for each. Lock down the image, and it is easy to write on, erase, and add other Notebook features to the pages to aid the presentation and engagement of the page.
For a Mac, when you get to the print dialog box, you can select the "PDF" button in the bottom left corner and save the document as a .pdf. Then you can open Notebook and go to the "Insert" menu and select "Picture from file". Select the .pdf document and it will create a Notebook page for each page of the file.
Save the new Notebook file and always have it ready to open, annotate and interact with, and have a new copy for each class. Just save a copy of the file for the number of classes that will use it and name it accordingly.
