SMART's Vision for Collaborative Learning in a Changing World

I love the concept. The cost is going to keep it from becoming a reality. I read today that in Illinois, 47% of the students live in "low income" families. That is defined as below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. With those numbers, tools like this in many students' homes is unlikely.

SMART is always looking to the future with it's hardware and software, but the money issue will only get more and more prevalent, in my opinion. And true technology integration,…

SMART Online Training Options

Last year, as a SMART Exemplary Educator (SEE), I was able to take the online SMART training courses to become a SMART Certified Lesson Developer (SCLD). I was very pleased with the courses overall.

They also have several free courses available. One in particular, Skill Level 1-Engaging Students Through Discussion, was very helpful. In this free, 20 minute course, it talks…

SBRGVUG November Meeting

From the feedback during the meeting in October, it seems that a lot of people like the Saturday meeting time. I realize that there is no perfect time, but I'd still like to get some feedback about the meetings and times. Please go to the SBRGVUG Survey (not active yet) and provide your ideas and preferences for meeting content and times.

Since this is supposed to be a global user group, I do want to make the times somewhat friendly for European and Australian members to…

Elevate the Problem

I attended the SMART Exemplary Educator Summit this July at the SMART HQ in Calgary. It was a great time of learning about what's coming from the company to giving them feedback on many of the products they now offer. One of the SMART Employees, Chris Klein, talked about "Elevating the problem." In other words, ramp up the problem and look for that solution instead of focusing on small problems and solutions. He discussed district…

Blossom Learning Course Review

I had the opportunity to preview the Applied Smart Board Course from Blossom Learning. I found it very easy to use. Simply log in with the email that was used to purchase the course and click "Launch." There are 8 chapters. Each chapter has a 5-10 minute video (I never timed them) and a 10 question chapter assessment. If you don't get 80% on the assessment you'll have to do the assessment again. It would be nice if there was a link… Continue

Smart Notebook 10.6 – New tools

Smart Notebook users should be aware of a new update that came out last week. Version 10.6 has a couple of very neat new features.

The most obvious feature is a new icon on your toolbar that gives you access to Measurement Tools. This is basically a ruler, protractor, compass and set square that may look familiar if you’ve ever used Promethean software :) All of these tools should prove very useful to maths teachers.

Senteo 2.0 is Coming!

And it's free if you already have Senteo response systems! Coming late summer, August probably, is the new Senteo 2.0 software. It's a big improvement.

You can still get questions in as easily. The big change is the management side. There will be an integrated gradebook. You can tag students with demographic information to sort data by groups and compare their results to other groups or class average. You can import other grades from other sources (not sure of details on that) into… Continue

Smart Document Camera

Yes, I have the identical ELMO, but it will not work with the doc camera button on the Notebook 10 tool bar. It takes a few more clicks. The firmware is different and can't be updated. Bummer. That said, "Cool! "

However, if you are going to get document cameras, take a serious look at the Smart camera. Its sister, the ELMO camera, works great. The arm rotates and you can pretty much get to any angle or side of a 3D object. You just can't get to the bottom. :-( The picture is… Continue

Smart at NECC

I stopped by the Smart booth at NECC yesterday...cool stuff coming down the pike. One of the coolest is mode switching, or as it officially called, smart touch. How many of us have done this: you have the pen in your hand and then touch the board to move an object and draw a line instead? Come on, be honest. We've all done it. That is soon to be a thing of the past. Mode switching will make the board "smart" enough to know the difference between the pen tip, finger nail, finger pad, and whole… Continue
