ePonderings part 1

Today I sit at my computer attempting to write my first blog. My main goal is to improve my writing and share thoughts about teaching and learning.

This year I have read an amazing amount of opinions, views and ideas as I have ventured into social networking. Most I have agreed with and some I do not. But as a result of all my exploration on the web I have deduced that I can waste a lot of time looking and playing and not actually doing anything productive.

I have made use… Continue

Notebook SE (Student Edition)

A new version of Notebook is coming out, probably in January. A Beta testing period starts in August and goes to December. You can sign up to participate on the Smart website at http://smarttech.com/NotebookSEbeta.

Notebook software has traditionally been teacher focused. Now it's moving to a student focus. This shows the iTunes like interface that kids are familiar with. He is also opening multiple files within the same notebook page… Continue

Revolution Member Bret Rocks the House!

Bret Gensberg did two Smart Board sessions this morning at NECC. I'm sorry to say I missed the first one, but I'm glad I went to the second! He is a phenomenal speaker. He brings passion to his subject, which happened to be the Smart Board. According to him he "Eats, sleeps, and breaths Smart Board" and people give him money to buy more. He is available to come do professional development onsite for you, so if you are looking for a funny, passionate, and practical Smart related PD, contact… Continue

Senteo 2.0 is Coming!

And it's free if you already have Senteo response systems! Coming late summer, August probably, is the new Senteo 2.0 software. It's a big improvement.

You can still get questions in as easily. The big change is the management side. There will be an integrated gradebook. You can tag students with demographic information to sort data by groups and compare their results to other groups or class average. You can import other grades from other sources (not sure of details on that) into… Continue

Smart Document Camera

Yes, I have the identical ELMO, but it will not work with the doc camera button on the Notebook 10 tool bar. It takes a few more clicks. The firmware is different and can't be updated. Bummer. That said, "Cool! "

However, if you are going to get document cameras, take a serious look at the Smart camera. Its sister, the ELMO camera, works great. The arm rotates and you can pretty much get to any angle or side of a 3D object. You just can't get to the bottom. :-( The picture is… Continue

Got Plasma?

Coming in August (don't hold me to that--just a date given to me at the booth) will be a frame that can go around a plasma TV up to 65". It uses the cameras in the corners, like the big rear projection models they have, to turn your plasma TV into a Smart Board! Hook the display to your computer and that's what you have. They said that this is an example of "future proof" technology. That means that it is something that will work in the future because the price of the plasmas that big will be… Continue

Smart at NECC

I stopped by the Smart booth at NECC yesterday...cool stuff coming down the pike. One of the coolest is mode switching, or as it officially called, smart touch. How many of us have done this: you have the pen in your hand and then touch the board to move an object and draw a line instead? Come on, be honest. We've all done it. That is soon to be a thing of the past. Mode switching will make the board "smart" enough to know the difference between the pen tip, finger nail, finger pad, and whole… Continue
