Sorry it took so long to get back to you, Jennifer! I'm new at this Ning thing! :)
My classroom situation at the beginning of the school year was this: I got transferred from the "old" building into the newly-built addition. I'd had a SMART board for 3 years by then, but it wasn't installed in my new classroom for several months. Finally, after exhibiting a great deal of saintly patience (and pitching a small temper tantrum to administration on my behalf, I'll admit), it was installed.
During the SMART board "drought," I had to re-do most of my lessons that were intended for an interactive board, which, unfortunately (or fortunately??) were created with the SMART board in mind, because I came to enjoy using it so much! Needless to say, the projector was up from day 1, and everything was connected to my computer right away, except the board itself. Many lessons could be presented against the white wipe-off board that was placed on my "projection" wall, but I had to use wipe-off markers and erasers, rather than the technology, to get things to "appear" or move on the documents I showed. Many of the items (completed Venn diagrams, for an example) could not be saved as simply as when it was all hooked up. Instead, we'd do an activity with the Venn diagram projected on the wipe-off board (using the wipe-off markers), and I'd have to get on my computer later on in the day and transfer what the kids wrote by typing it in the proper location. To me, it felt like I had to re-invent the wheel, and it was a tremendous time-drainer--not just having to re-write everything that my students brainstormed, but having to spend an enormous amount of time re-formatting my lesson plans for math, reading, science, handwriting--basically every curriculum subject--because my interactive board wasn't hooked up.
When I learned that brand new SMART boards were being installed in rooms that had never had them before, while mine sat against the wall in my classroom, I pitched that tiny tantrum (and rightfully so, I believe). The very next day, guess what was hooked up?
I wish you lots of luck, and hope that you can soon enjoy the benefits of the whole enchilada, rather than just some of its parts!
