Share 'Legacy Error When Embedding PDFs'

I am working with a local university and they have some Macs that have Notebook 10.7.144 on them.  When attempting to drag and drop a PDF file into Notebook or onto the Notebook icon on the desktop they get a legacy error.  I am able to do this on my Mac.  Any thoughts or insights?  Do you think a simple uninstall and update to 10.8 will fix this?  TIA!!
