One idea for the upside down question mark is to do a question mark, rotate it and then save it to your My Content. My Content is a folder that you can save your pictures and words so you can easily drag them out when you need them. When you need an upside down question mark drag it out from My Content. You could also save special characters in My content too.

These codes work for my Smart board. The only time I have problems is when I copy/paste something from Excel into Smart - for some reason the codes don't show up. I know there are better shortcuts but since I switch so much between languages, I just post these on the edge of my monitor.

For German and Spanish language codes, hold down the “alt” key and enter on the keypad these #s:

Ä 0196 ä 0228 Ö 0214 ö 0246 Ü 0220 ü 0252 ß 0233

á 0225 é 0233 í 0237 ó 0243 ú 0250 ñ 0241 ¡ 0161

Á 0193 É 0201 Í 0205 Ó 0211 Ú 0218 Ñ 0209 ¿ 0191

I've also used the ascii codes with the smartboard (alt + 233=é for example). That's what I was used to. I think the only thing the smartboard won't do is "insert" an accent like a word document. If you have a mac, then I think it's "option" something--whatever you are used to doing. I have a question about sharing files. I use a lot of google images when I do smartboard activities. I've been worried that if I share those files online I will be in copyright infringement. Does anyone know if that is true or not?

The SB will also recognize foreign letters when handwritten and convert it into text. I know I had to add "German" to a language option but I'm not sure where that was. I'm at home on a Mac and our school has PCs. Sorry I can't tell you how to do it, but it is possible.

Thanks for the answer, Vicki. I remember now that she was wondering about the upside question mark at the beginning of questions. Thanks.

For Nancy... If your Spanish teacher is working with a PC, then she should simply type her text onto the Smart notebook and use the same keystrokes she uses in Word to type her accents. For example, ctrl+' then letter o gets you ó... ctrl+shift+~ then n gets you ñ. She can also use the alt+number pad strokes: for example: alt+130 gets you é... alt+160 gets you á. If using a Mac... I'm sorry but I can't help because at my school our Smartboards are all connected to PCs so I don't know if the keystrokes that I used to use on the Mac will work with Smart notebook.

I am Dir of Tech at our high school. I thought there would be a lot of value with Notebook/Smartboard for our Language teachers. However, our Spanish teacher was not "sold" as she could not find a way to use accent marks. Is there a simple way? Thanks.

I've been slacking on sharing files too...I'll upload some more soon as I completed like two more units since my lasy post. Everything I make can pretty much be altered to Spanish or German easily. If anyone has a question on I file I made and is not sure what to do with it just drop me a line. Joe

Hi all,
I'm a German and Spanish teacher in Minnesnowta. I absolutely LOVE how the Smartboard has transformed my lessons for the better. Like Julie, I've got a lot of funky stuff that's unique to my classes but have a lot of examples of things that could be modified. Has anyone else noticed how MINIMAL the sharing is on the Smart website for world language stuff? Man, those core class teachers have it made!!!!

Glad I found this group. I didn't even realize there were groups on this Ning until Joe Campisi mentioned it on the Classroom 2.0 ning. Thanks Joe,

I'm a German teacher and have create SB lessons almost every night for my students. I'm happy to share them, but they are designed for my students on that day, not around themes or a book. However, let me know how I can help. I've gotten pretty good at working with Notebook 10.
