CEC Seeks Success Stories for Annual Publication
Each year, CEC publishes the Federal Outlook for Exceptional Children, an overview of federally funded programs that impact children and youth with exceptionalities. Personal stories of students who have benefited from special education and early intervention services put a human touch on the publication, so CEC invites you to share your success stories for possible inclusion in the 2011 edition. The deadline is Jan. 21.

Great opportunity to share the stories of how technology is making a difference for our students with special needs.

This TAP-It discussion really has me thinking --- I love the accessiblity but I am somewhat bothered by the fact that kids could potentially participating separate from the large group -- again making them "different". I discussed with one of my resellers and we thought what about using a product like SMART Sync. This way the student could work on this platform but allow the teacher to push out work and also display and have the student even control the main SMARTBoard. No cables, no daisy chaining just Sync. I learned how to use it today in about 20 minutes --

Great ideas. Great discussion. Someone had shown me the link to the TAPit. I like Felo's comment below that speaks to inclusion - having one SMARTBoard with all of the students participating together. Whatever setting that you are in the key to me is an interface that allows ALL students to participate on one common platform with peers. Although I do like some of the access features of the TAPit I am nervous about something that allows a student or a small group of students to work alone - at the back of the class..... We have fought hard in our District to have teachers really see ALL kids and to plan for them, include them in whole group instruction to ensure they are learning meaningful academic content alongside peers. We continue to explore how different interfaces can work with the SMARTBoard to enable (to see the look on a student's face when they see their V can control the SMARTBoard or that with the Transparent Background feature in Notebook and a wireless switch we can enable our scanners). For more information see smartinclusion.wikispaces.com or come to the session at Closing the Gap where we can share ideas. It is the tip of the iceberg for possibilities I think. I do like the idea of daisy-chaining the TAPit or satalight to the main SMARTBoard so the student could access the same material as the rest of the class at the same time but cost??? I just have a feeling that the interactive whiteboard companies will see the need for an AT plug-into Notebook that would allow ALL kids to participate together ...... Here's hoping.

Felo, your experiment with the 16-inch Asus EssTop integrated computer/touchscreen is great. One Saturday, I went into a local computer store, and played with a similar touchscreen computer for a half hour, went home, loaded some educational software on a thumb drive, took it back to the store, and "researched" until they told me to go home.

For many students who have less physical disabilities, your "experiment" is a great "direct selection" solution.

These devices start at $8,000, plus accessories, freight and installation. Assistive Technology professionals and school districts purchase them when that's the only practical computer access solution for a severely disabled student. They are in the same price range as power wheelchairs, rugged assistive augmentative communication (AAC) devices and eye tracking computer equipment. The "real" low-incidence consumers, who would be apprpriate users to purchase this for, are probably only 2% to 4% of the student population, maybe less.

It is very heartwarming to watch a therapist work with a student with serious range of motion problems, and make positive gains with these tools, but it's heartwrenching, too.

The device has an impressive presence, how much does it cost?. For our school It would be impossible to buy one of these, but we are conducting an experiment with 16-inch Asus EeeTop one student and they can take home.

Also I have SMART Notebook installed and so can work at home as well as work in the classroom
