I am excited to have come across this Special Education and SMARTBoards Group. I am even more excited to connect with fellow professionals who are innovators -- who think outside of the box to support ALL students. I am a Speech Language Pathologist at Upper Canada District School Board in Ontario, Canada. I notice the thread of sharing great websites and resources. We have done some research and continue to research the benefits of SMARTBoards + assistive technology + critical pedagogy to allow all students access to meaningful academic and social participation in a variety of settings. At smartinclusion.wikispaces.com you will find our preliminary research paper as well as initial data in graphic form... and particularly pertinent to this discussion at the bottom is a downloadable list of favourite websites that our teachers to continue to add to -- and that I need to make sure I continue to update. Many have been mentioned here but some are new.

We are hosting a group of school districts from across Ontario, Canada as well as some from the USA in August 2010 to share the principles of SMART Inclusion. I am particularly excited as our Ed Consultant from SMART Tech will be joining us as well as representatives serving a wide range of students - students with hearing impairments, vision impairments, students with autism, students with developmental disabilities.... we are all coming together to share our experiences and also to look at the full potential of all technology including the SMARTBoard coupled with theory to support our kids in whole group instruction. I will let you know how it goes as I am very excited about making the impossible possible for ALL students.

PS - Here is hoping that we may be able to give input around product design as it is my quest to make SMARTBoards accessible by ALL. Right now our students who use switches can not access Notebook directly but rather required third party software to run in Notebook ---- I would welcome any ideas as this sounds like a knowledgeable group:]

There is an exciting research article that I have been sharing. Special Education Teachers would find it interesting. It is from the Journal of Autism Developmental Disorders: J Autism Dev Disord (2007) 37:1869–1882: Impact of SMART Board Technology: An Investigation of Sight

Thanks, Amy. Speaking of 2Simple, I worked with some VI students in Wyandott Michigan who enjoyed interacting with Music Toolkit and our adapted SMART Board (satalight). One of their students was a delightful teenage boy, who was very social and enjoyed interacting with others. He sat in front of the satalight, and the teacher told him to reach up and play the keys (in the 2 Play mode). He laughed and laughed as he heard the notes being played. Everyone called him a modern-day Steevie Wonder.

In Oconto Wisconsin, I worked with some ASD students, using the Music Toolkit's 2Explore mode, and they learned to make beat patterns.

2Paint's programs are real nice, easy to learn how to use, work well on any SMART Board, and are inexpensive.

Thanks for sharing Mike! Here is a link to the 2Simple Paint software page. On their page they also have a quick video to explain the software.

I worked with about 100 special needs children in Detroit last week, using an adapted SMART Board (satalight) for OT/VI/ASD, and one software program they really liked using was 2Simple's 2 Paint a Picture. It was very intuitive for them to use, and provided immediate "cause-and-effect" feedback.

An OT shared a the Handwriting for Kids website that she used yesterday to review and practice cursive writing. If you click on the letter a new page will open so the student can watch the animation (letter being written) and then practice it.
