Comment by Randy Tran on March 1, 2011 at 12:05pm @Larry> Only one thing left to try. Try using a different cable, and a different port (You'll notice that where the SMART Board controller connects to the Pen tray there are 2 ports. These exist on the same bus, so it does not matter which port you use - they both do the same thing)
If you tried the above, and nothing changes, and also If you've just swapped the pen tray and the problem carried over to another SMART Board (which it looks like it did), then you've just isolated the problem to the pen tray and will need to get it replaced. You'll want to contact SMART support (or send me an e-mail) with details of what was happening, along with the serial number of the SMART Board itself where that pen tray came from. you'll also be asked for specific information pertaining to shipping information once this information has been verified, and a request can be made out to replace that Pen Tray for you.

Comment by Randy Tran on February 22, 2011 at 1:16pm @Larry> Sounds more like a controller problem, so try a firmware reflash/update, on top of Obe's steps, preferably before you try to contact us.
First of all, make sure your SMART Board is connected to your computer directly via USB cable (no wireless connections!)
Next, go to your applications menu, click on Applications > SMART Technologies > SMART Product Drivers > Additional Tools > SMART Firmware updater. Follow the on screen instructions; assuming your software is up to date, the firmware it should update to is 5.2.5.0. If your board already has this version of the firmware, stop here unless you have a Windows computer that you can connect to the SMART Board (read further on for more details). If you can update the SMART Board, please do so.
If you cannot, and have a Windows computer to connect to the SMART Board, run the SC9-4.1.2.0 Flash.exe file located in C:\Program files\SMART Technologies\SMART Product Drivers (or wherever you installed the SMART Product Drivers). this will downgrade the controller to a version 4 firmware, and then you can try to update the firmware to ver.5.2.5.0.
If you are unable to reflash the firmware, or you were able to upgrade/reflash and get the same results, you'll definitely want to contact SMART support (or you can send me an e-mail; I may take some time to respond, so calling might be a faster option).
Comment by Obe Hostetter on February 22, 2011 at 12:58pm Here is what I do for fixing SMART pen problems...
1. Uninstall just the SMART Board drivers by navigating to Macintosh HD-Applications-SMART Product Drivers/SMART Drivers folder and run the uninstaller. Download and install the latest SMART Board drivers from http://www.smarttech.com/us/Support/Browse+Support/Download+Software
2. Unplug the phone cord located below the pen tray and plug it back into port 1. Take out each pen and eraser and blow hard to clean out the dust that may be preventing the pens from working.
3. Try a different phone cord from a different SMART Board. If the pens now work, then the phone cord needs replaced. Contact SMART.
4. Try a different pen tray from a different SMART Board. If the new pen tray works but not the old one, a new pen tray needs ordered.
5. If the pen tray or phone cord is bad, Contact SMART. SMART will need the date stamp (13/04/2009) on the bottom of the pen tray and the SMART Board serial number (SB660-R2-????) located on the right. Call SMART at 1-866-518-6791 to order a new one.
Comment by Larry Robinson on February 22, 2011 at 12:48pm I have a Smart Board in my classroom with a pen problem. When I pick up the black pen, the red light flashes once and goes off. If I keep holding the pen, it will flash once about every 20 seconds but it never stays on. I have tried cleaning the sensor both with air and with a soft cloth and resetting the Smart Board to factory defaults. All of the other pens work fine. Does anyone else have something I can try or is it time to call Smart Technologies? Thanks
Comment by Sara Getting on February 2, 2011 at 7:40pm Obe,
About the display settings, you were right on the money. It took care of the issue immediately. Thanks for the tip!

Comment by Jennifer Harper on February 2, 2011 at 12:24pm HI Larry,
To hide the page on the side bar on a Mac, you have to go to "Full Screen" mode.
