Tips for Installing SMART Board Notebook 10 (Floating toolbar & Ink Aware)

After installing Notebook 10, on 10.4 computers, I rename SMART Board tools to new SMART board tools so the floating toolbar won't load during startup. I can always double-click on floating tools or SMART Board tools to load it when I want it. On 10.5 computers, I use a terminal fix.

Here is the terminal fix to edit startup programs on a MAC. Be careful when using it:
1. Load up Terminal and maximize the window by clicking on the green circle in the top left corner
2. Copy and paste this into the terminal window:
sudo plutil -convert xml1 /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist and hit return
3. Type in the password for the user and hit return
4. Copy and paste this into the terminal window:
sudo pico /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist
5. use the arrow keys to get to the line that start the
that mentions SMART Board Tools remove all lines shown below: Hide
Path
/Applications/SMART Board Software/SMART Board Tools.app

To remove the lines one by one use control-k to cut an entire line DON'T DELETE THE SMARTBOARDSERVICE , otherwise your SMARTBoard will not work and the fix is to reinstall the SMART board software.
6 Use control-x to exit, control-y to save

We do our report cards in Excel. We discovered that the Smart ink aware doesn't allow us to copy info to multiple sheets on our report cards in Excel unless we disable the ink aware. Also 99% of the teachers don't use the ink aware toolbar in Word and Excel so I disable it. In 10.4, I rename the Aware icon under SMART Board Tools to NOT aware. Under 10.5, I load up the Activity Monitor under Utilities, click once on the aware process and kill it. Then I delete aware completely since it is only needed for having the ink aware toolbar in Word or Excel.

Brilliant! I've wondered about disabling the SB tools on start up. Thanks for the post!
There is a much easier way to remove SMART Board Tools from start up on a MAC:
1. Go to System Preferences (click the Apple and then select System Preferences)
2. Click Accounts (or my account)
3. Click Login Items (to the right of the password button)
4. A window will appear on the right showing the apps/programs that launch at start up
5. You can choose SMART Board Tools and then click the minus (-) sign to remove it from start up.

Hope this helps. I just came across this after looking for an easier way.
Fantastic I will share it far and wide
The latest download from Smarttech at http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-US/Support/Downloads/SBS/NBSv10MacE... does give you the choice of whether to automatically load SMARTBoard tools on startup. The default is checked so make sure to UNCHECK the box when installing.
Thanks for the info Obe. Is there a way to stop SMARTBoard tools from loading at startup if it is already installed. I have a lab so if there is an easier way than reinstalling(there are 5 users set up for students)- I would try it first.
When you change the SMARTBoard Tools name, it won't load. You may have to load up Utilities-Activity Monitor and kill the SMARTBoard Tools before you rename it.

On Mac 10.4, I would just rename SMARTBoard Tools to new SMARTBoard Tools. When you restart your computer, the floating tools shouldn't load.

On Mac 10.5, you either have to use my terminal fix stated above or change premissions so you can rename SMARTBoard Tools.

After fixing one computer, you could copy the SMARTBoard folder that contains the SMARTBoard tools renamed to new SMARTBoard tools to all computers using Apple Remote Desktop.
You make it sound as though ink aware is installed when you install smartboard 10. I am using a macbook with 10.5.4 and when I install Smartboard 10 and Senteo software so that I can use my powerpoints for test review, I do not see ink aware. I understand that this feature is not available for the mac side. Is this correct?
The latest SMARTBoard 10 software does support aware for Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. I haven't noticed that any aware toolbars appear in PowerPoint.
