1) My teachers were wondering if you could change the type of question for an existing question without having to erase the question and add a new one?
No, sorry but you can copy and paste the question to the new type.

4) In teacher tools if you make a mistake on naming the Gradebook (when you first enter the information in) what do you do? It was grayed out and the teachers couldn't edit it.
Yes, you can change the info. Make sure you have no classes running. Load up Teacher Tools. Click on Gradebook. Click on edit and change your info.
5) When importing questions from PDF, it put them in all weird..different sizes and symbols were added. any ideas?
and lastly,
See this web page for how to setup your PDF so it imports

VV, you bring up some interesting questions! I can't help with all of them, but I think I can shed some light on a few of them.

1) I recently took a class on the resp. system and our instructor told us you are unable to change a question format once you have entered it, you would just have to delete it and create a new one.
5) When importing from pdf, are the teachers being careful to format exactly as the question should read with no extra returns, headers, footers, page numbers, etc? That can interfere with the import. Also, symbols could represent an apostrophe or other punctuation that isn't recognized. Another thing we were told is macs only accept .pdf and pcs only recognize a .doc (sounds like that wasn't the issue, though)

Sorry I couldn't help more! Hope this helps a little!

For all Response Windows Users, Response 3.0 is now out. Get it here:
SMART Response 2010 Win

For all you Mac users, the software is still almost done with testing and should be released shortly.

was giving an inservice today to teachers on using Teacher Tools and Creating Assessments in the Notebook system to use with Response. We are a MAC school. I had run into a few issues that I could remember and was wondering if anyone else experienced it.
1) My teachers were wondering if you could change the type of question for an existing question without having to erase the question and add a new one?
2) Also, some teachers noticed that when in the question window for multiple choice, they would add their choices and randomly the notebook software would keep on copying their answer to the multiple choice area, disabling them from adding a new answer.
3) Their font also would randomly change after they clicked off editing the font..would go from Times new roman to a italicized font.
4) In teacher tools if you make a mistake on naming the Gradebook (when you first enter the information in) what do you do? It was grayed out and the teachers couldn't edit it.
5) When importing questions from PDF, it put them in all weird..different sizes and symbols were added. any ideas?
and lastly,
6) When entering a question as an opinion question with no points (even short response) why did it a message pop up prompting you to add point values to the question?

Any ideas on these problems/questions would be great! Thanks!

Nick,
Thanks for sharing your idea about using a content page in your smart response quizzes. It's a great way to save some time. Plus, having all your questions on one page would remind me at a glance what's on the quiz.

Ok, I have good news. We've got a workaround for any Response users who have installed Safari 5.0 on their Macs.

http://downloads.smartmacsupport.com/Safari5fix.zip

In the above zip file, there is an app one of our guys created on his spare time to provide everyone a 3-click solution to this problem.

Please note, after applying the fix, if you do find that you need to reinstall the software before we release Notebook Software 10.6 SP1, you will need to run this fix again.

Cheers!

To all Mac OSX users: Please do not install the new Safari 5.0 update recently released by Apple. (Take great care when you are doing automatic system updates). Installation of safari 5.0 on Mac OSX will cause Notebook and Response to crash when you try to use Response features.

I'll update you all on when we have a fix or a workaround ready.

Laura, Nick, and others:
I have just begun using the clickers with quizzes: I gave students a print version of the quiz and had them work at their own pace with the clickers. This is fantastic- the quizzes are graded for me! However, I am using tags to group questions and track student progress throughout the year on topics (vocabulary, comprehension, main idea/details, etc.). I have a few questions about tags:

1. Are tags case-sensitive? In other words, are "Vocabulary" and "vocabulary" the same?

2. Is there any way to view all the tags I've created? I'm currently working on turning all of my reading tests into Smart Response files, and I want to check that my tags are consistent throughout the year (not all tests are in the same Notebook file). Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Thanks!

Thanks Nick. I love the idea of the using the content page as the first page. I do weekly quizzes this way, except the children have their own copy of the quiz rather than having the questions on each page and they work at their own pace to complete the questions. I also found that they could turn off the clicker when they are finished and the results still save.
