SMART Board Revolution

A Revolution in Education

I am conducting training with resource teachers that want to create a class in teacher tools for each small group they serve.  Some of their students are in more than one of their small groups.  Can that student be in two classes at once within teacher tools and share the same student ID number, or does the student have to have a different ID for each class they are in?

Hope that makes sense.  Thanks. :)

For me - we have had to give the students another ID for the small groups - if they were already in another group - like the full class - they couldn't use that ID across multiple groups :(  Would be great if you can use the same ID if student in multiple groups.

Hi, Emily!

We haven't had any problems with students using the same ID across multiple classes. For instance, in an elementary classroom where the teacher teaches all 5 academic subjects, we have created 5 different classes named by subject in Teacher Tools. The same set of students belong to all 5 classes inside teacher tools, and each student uses one unique ID for all five classes.

Where you will run into problems is having two different students trying to use the same ID number. Teacher Tools recognizes students by ID number, not name. What you will find, if you manually populate the teachers' classes instead of using the import tool, is that once you have the first small group class created and you begin typing the students into the next small group class, if you type the same ID that you have used in a previous class, Teacher Tools will populate the name fields for you when you tab off the ID field.

Good luck to you!

Paige :)

Great to know!  I will try this, too!

You will need assign a different number to the duplicate kids. I have my resource class set up in a class. I also have my inclusion class come in my room to use the reponse system, and some of my resource kids are in that room. I created another class for my inclusion students. I used the students' lunch numbers (since they already know their lunch number). If the kid was a duplicate, I just added a one to the end of the original number.

Hope the explanation makes sense :)

Our music teacher set up numbers for everyone and gave them passwords since she saw all students. Then, we could make our own classes on Teacher Tools on our computers and use the same numbers. They are really logging in to different receivers in the different classes when they find or join a class. Each Teacher Tool file is connected to that receiver, so the same numbers work.

But now that I reread your post, that isn't at all what you are asking. I have two classes set up in teacher tools, my math class and everything else. Some of my math students are from my homeroom, so they are also in everything else. I use the same ID numbers for those students. So, yes, they can use the same number across different classes in Teacher Tools.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have since found that if adding students manually the system will not add a student with the same ID number from another class (even if it is the same student). However, when adding students via import from Excell the same students are able to be in multiple classes with the same ID number.

We found a way to add the same student to multiple classes using the same ID:

When you are in the 'students' tab for the class you wish to add your student(s) to, rather than typing their information into the bottom area (you'll get an error that tells you the # must be unique)...

Type the student ID in an open cell in the spreadsheet in the top section .  Once you type in their ID, their information will automatically populate.

Importing from Excel (Windows) or .csv (Mac) works as well.
