A Revolution in Education
Not really a SMART Board question, but I was hoping someone would be able to help. Our school just got 10 iPads. I'm thinking of having a parent volunteer come in during center time and having her work with a small group using the iPads. Does anyone have any apps that they'd recommend for first graders? Particularly for language arts, but I'm open to other subjects. Thanks!

The kids can draw a picture and then tell about it, or re-tell and draw as they go. I also have used it after a social studies lesson on landforms. The child draws and "teaches" what he learned.

Permalink Reply by Sara Getting on October 20, 2011 at 5:03pm I'm a 1st Grade teacher and am going on my second year of using a class set of them. My favs for Language Arts are: ABC Tracer, Word Magic, word families, and pocket phonic.
Good Luck!

Permalink Reply by Obe Hostetter on October 20, 2011 at 7:25pm There are many good free reading and math apps. You can see my list of free apps for all subjects on this Ning at http://ipadeducators.ning.com/forum/topics/tell-us-about-your-favor...
Mad Math Lite is great for math because you can customize the app. You can write over the white flash card to work out the math problem just like on a SMART Board.
Storykit is great for reading or creating your own story. You can create pictures, record sound and add text.
I would also recommend buying at least one Dr. Seuss book because they are very interactive books. You can click on any word or picture.

You move the characters on the screen and record your story (voice and actions). There is a free app. For 2.99 you can get additional characters and backgrounds. You can also add your own characters (I haven't tried that yet). I plan on using it for retelling and creating stories.
