Since it is a new Apple MacBook Air, I'll assume it is running Apple Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). SMART Board Service is probably blocked by your security settings from running at log in. Try these steps to change the Gatekeeper setting:
1. Go to Apple menu > System Preferences… > Security & Privacy > General tab.
2. Set "Allow applications downloaded from" to Anywhere.

Thank you for your help - but my machine is only on 10.7 -- any further thoughts?
After you turn off Gatekeeper then I would reinstall the drivers in case Gatekeeper stopped part of the software from installing. Also, after installing the drivers, restart your computer.
