A Revolution in Education
I keep getting this message when I open a Notebook file on my MacBook running Lion. I had 10.8 and it popped up so I installed the beta testing version of Notebook 11 and it was fine for a few days and it just popped up again. Here is the message:
SMART Notebook has encountered an error in processing program settings. Reinstall SMART Notebook to restore the default settings.
Anyone else having this issue?
Thanks,
Aly :)

I remember having to do that when I installed 11. If you didn't, that could be why it started again. Some files that didn't get removed may now be interacting with 11 and causing the problem.
Hi Matt,
I thought I did. I just got a new computer issued from my school and its a MacBook (my name's Aly and I'm a PC) so I'm working with a slight learning curve. The only reason that makes me think that it's not the uninstall issue is because it happened with 10.8 first which made me install the beta NB 11. Thanks for checking for me! :)

Permalink Reply by Matt Granger on April 18, 2012 at 7:50am But if the issue arose in 10.8 and all the files didn't get removed before installing 11, then the corrupted 10.8 files could find their way into 11 and make it happen there too. The "program settings" sounds like preferences settings. If that got corrupted in 10.8 and not removed, then 11 may be accessing the same file now and causing the problem.
I would totally uninstall 11 and reinstall it. If you could wait until Monday, then you wouldn't need to use the beta anymore.
Permalink Reply by Obe Hostetter on April 18, 2012 at 7:58am I have got this error may times on MACs running Notebook 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. The fix is to copy this file from a good computer and replace it on the bad computer. Mac HD > Users > Shared > Library > Preferences > com.smarttech.Registry.plist or run this uninstaller from http://downloads.smartmacsupport.com/SMART%20ToolSet.zip and then reinstall.

I have the NB 11 release already so I will most likely mess around with it this weekend. Thanks for the help!
Permalink Reply by Alan Hoskin on November 30, 2012 at 12:06am This is an issue that has frustrated me for awhile. It happened in Notebook 10 so I updated to v11. It is now happening with v 11 as well. I tried replacing the com.smarttech.Registry.plist file but it didn't work for me.
Also tried http://downloads.smartmacsupport.com/SMART%20ToolSet.zip but was told that it was outdated and would not work. So I sat down and did a new restore.

To delete everything there is a Smart Software Uninstaller app in the Smart Tech folder on your computer
Went into Preferences and deleted all the com.SmartTech files (got rid of everything, just inn case - may want to keep gallery ones?)

For those who are interested and who may or may not still be experiencing this particular crash symptom, you'll be glad to know that it has been addressed with SMART Notebook 11 SP1 released towards the end of October.
You can either download and upgrade existing software version or perform an uninstall/cleanup prior re-install. Personally, I recommend the latter to be a much better route.
Since the SMART ToolSet no longer functions as some of you have discovered, below is a link to a cleanup script that can be run via Terminal. Of course, you will need to navigate to the extraction location first within Terminal and run the command sudo ./CleanUp.sh

Hope this helps!
