Im not 100% sure I understand the problem. I am usually wanting my videos to open as a window within a notebook page... Are you creating a link to a video file, and then expecting it to open seperately in a video software?
Yes, I'm creating a link to a video file and expecting it to open separately - That's how it works on the Mac. I'm using a PC for this project because notebook software keeps crashing on the Mac. I'm not used to the way a PC works.
Is this a video you are creating or one out on the web? I sometimes embed videos in my presentations by converting them to a flash file by using a site called downloader9.com. If you can do this, then you don't have to worry about linking to the video.
Basically if I understand you, you want to change file associations. The directions are for Windows XP computers but should be similar for Vista and Windows 7. One way to do this is:
1. Right click on the video file on your computer
2. Select Open With
3. Choose Program and find your VLC player in Program files.
4. Check the box to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".
5. Click ok.
