Talk with your IT department first. I teach in VA and our Director of Tech. is able to get equipment a lot cheaper than teachers can. Make sure you do your homework too. A SMART Board requires an LCD projector. There are models of SMART Boards that come with projectors already attached, if you choose a model without a projector you will need to have one in your room (either ceiling mounted or on a cart).

Grant writing is a wondeful way to obtain technology, just be careful with the grant. A lot are coming with strings attached and end up being loads of paperwork/reports that need completed as follow-up.

Good luck!
I have a projector installed so I think that helps. Our School District had a vision to get everyone a SMART Board and ran out of money. We were trained on it this summer, and I loved it!!!! That is when I became motivated to get one somehow. I know grants are a lot of paperwork but if I have no other options I may have to persue it! Thanks for the reply! If you think of anything else let me know!!!
I have a SB with the projector attached to the arm (model 600i). At first I thought it looked awkward having this arm stick out from the board. However, I love the fact that the shadow is minimized. Since the projector is above me, the projector comes down and there is very little shadow on the board when I or the kids write on it.

Towards the end of the school year my bulb burned out and it took 3-4 weeks to get a replacement. I borrowed a projector from the library and put it on a table in front of the board so I could still use the SB for lessons. The shadow while writing was very noticeable and annoying. In addition, any slight movement of the table required me to reorient my board. This happened at least once, sometimes 3 times during a class period.

If you have a choice in boards, I'd recommend the 600i because it minimizes the shadows the best. A ceiling mounted projector would be my next option and if you have no other choice, have a projector sitting on a table.
I have a ceiling mount up right now.....I just need a board!!! Thanks for the reply!
This is a quick SMART "Show and Tell" that I recently did for a school district. The last page has links to grant resources...
