SMART Board Revolution

A Revolution in Education

I am preparing to do a 45 minute workshop on Advanced SMARTBoard. It occurred to me as I was sorting through materials that what seems advanced to me isn't advanced to a classroom teacher. So I am looking for suggestions. If you were giving this workshop, what would you include?

What did u mean? Is your advanced too easy or too difficult for the other classroom teachers?
I would do a survey or ask your teachers what they want to learn. Some ideas might include how to download and insert animations into a Notebook file, how to use the object animations in the properties tab, how to download movie clips, and how to make interactive assessment page. The toolkit has lots of ideas. It is also important to show teachers how to find and share resources online using the SMART Exchange, this SMARTBoard Revolution Ning and the 3 search engines posted on the main page in the left column.

If you need more difficult ideas to instruct on...I would suggest you or your teachers taking Jim Hollis's online SMARTBoard classes since they teach advance Notebook concepts. See http://www.teacheronlinetraining.com/library/ for more info.

Another idea is to watch Jim Hollis's SMARTBoard video challenges and see if those videos inspire you to think of advanced ideas you could instruct on. http://smartboards.typepad.com/smartboard/challenge/

You are welcome to download, adapt and use my free Notebook 10 training file at http://smartboardrevolution.ning.com/forum/topics/notebook-10-train... I have simple ideas to advanced ideas in this file as well as classroom examples shown at the end.
@Karen- I am afraid that my advanced would be too difficult for my teachers. Several of them do not have a SMARTBoard in their classrooms and therefore do not have enough experience. On the other hand, I will have a handful of teachers that I have trained myself attending this workshop. Differentiation will be key---in 45 minutes! I guess that might be what I am stressing about the most.

@Obe Thank you for your suggestions. Your notebook file will be extremely helpful in terms of me not reinventing the wheel. I will have to check out Jim Hollis's videos as you suggested. Unfortunately a survey at this point would be fruitless. This training was coordinated with several others for one of my buildings. Oh wait! I just had an idea! Maybe I can do a polleverywhere or text the mob at the beginning of the training. Hmmmm....ideas are suddently rolling!

Thanks so much for the advice. I love this NING!
Here is how I teach Notebook to beginners. I install Notebook 10 and put my Notebook 10 training file on all 25 computers in a computer lab. I then teach using one SMARTBoard but have everyone involved because everyone can do the Notebook activities using their mouse on their computer. Together, we work through the Notebook file. This way it is a hands-on training and they remember better. This also allows for the advanced users to work ahead if they want. I also then try to get one person at a time to use the SMARTBoard for each page or activity.
Since you only have 45 minutes for both beginners and non-beginners, can you create a Screencast of some techniques the advanced people can follow to improve their skills and focus your time on the beginners?
Andrea,
I am a SMART Education Consultant for an audio visual company in VA. Please feel free to use my website for some resources. There is a good download called Tips and Tricks that I use in advanced training that you are welcome to. My portaportal site also has a ton of resources. Good luck!

@Julie Great idea!

@Colette Thank you for your permission to use the Tips and Tricks file. It is AWESOME!
Your websites are amazing!  So full of great resources!  Where exactly is your Tips and Tricks download?  I'd love to look at that file as well.
I was unable to find the Tips and Tricks download on your site. Where should I look?
Ask each participant to send you a wish list of things that they may be able to do on the software. Have plenty of ideas of your own that they can modify for their own use.

And always remember that SMART board training is really Notebook training first and foremost. That's the power under the hood. The board is a big monitor and you are a big mouse. So Obe's suggestion of having them doing it on the computers with the mouse is an excellent way to teach SMART Boards.

Sure, there are new ways to interact with the computer that the boards affords: ink layer, video player, etc that can also be part of an "Advanced" training. But if they are still learning and don't have a board yet, you are really teaching them Notebook.
