Accent marks are GONE. Typing accent marks -- such as in "mañana" -- no longer function in the text box tool. This is devastating. I sent this note to Chris Klein, the "Macintosh Specialist" at Smart -- no response yet.

Chris - I've installed a few 10.6 versions on Mac 10.5.8 and discovering a potential huge glitch for language teachers.
The ability to type with accents in no longer functional.
For example, typing in OPTION "e" "e" no longer produces the "é".
I just talked with Tech Support - #1548909 - their only suggestion is to switch the keyboard to Spanish. This does not work -- and should NOT ever be necessary to produce a standard accent.

Please look into this ASAP as this will infuriate language teachers everywhere.


This appears to be true also on Snow Leopard.
Please report back if anyone discovers a fix.

Hey Howard, I am actually not a teacher but a college student who uses SMART Notebook to take notes with my Wacom Tablet in class. I've been having the exact same problem and I have come up with what I feel is an adequate solution. As you can see from other responses, you can of course go to the "Edit" menu and chose "Special Characters". For me that seemed to be a huge inconvenience, especially to when jotting down quick notes in Italian class. I'm assuming you feel the same way... so try this:

Enter System Preferences > select Language & Text (if for some reason that's not showing up simply search for that in the search field at the top right) > once there go to the Text section.

This section allows you to set up symbol and text substitution for any program on your Mac (yes including SMART :-D). All you have to do is click the + sign and enter text that is similar to the accented letter you want to type and easy to remember (in the Replace field) and then enter the actual character you want in the With field.

for example: I set it up to replace ´e (option+shift+e, e) with é (option+e, e) but you could of course make it anything you want.

Next go into SMART > create a text box and type what ever you set up the Replace code as. Then select (hold down shift and then use the back arrow) those characters and right click or control+click on them. You should see 2 options at the top of the list: ‘Replace with “é”’ and ‘Replace Text Automatically’. If you chose ‘Replace Text Automatically’ it will replace it for the rest of that text box (unfortunately not the whole document).

Does it support Windows 7 yet? I'm getting impatient. Too many glitches, especially with the airliner.
Will, are you still having issues? I noticed this was back in January.
I spoke with Smart reseller Tech support earlier this week regarding Windows 7 os for Smart Sync upgrade, and from what they said, the new service pack update for Windows 7 should be released this week.....so check your smart upgrades to see if a new version is available.....you may want to call Smart tech support and find out........
i just uploaded the new 10.6 but it seems that the transparency backgroundicon is not showing. I downloaded it to a second computer and it still does not show. My magic pen now is not highlighted as well. Any one else having these problems
From what I have read, the Transparency icon on appears on the Windows Notebook version not the MAC Notebook version. See http://www2.smarttech.com/kbdoc/126571 for a comparison between Windows and MAC features on Notebook 10.6
We just upgraded to 10.6.94 Notebook on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Notebook is crashing immediately - even when logged on as administrator. We get a EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION error - we're testing with a SmartBoard SB860i Gen 1 (integrated board with Unifi 35 firmware just upgraded to 2.1.3. Anybody else experiencing this?

how about you?
I hate the fact that once you type, that's the default and you have to click on the select icon... grrr I always forget and end up having text boxes I don't want =o(
